Abel hammers juiced well away from the point of contact. Two points here: 1) It IS possible to obtain a good sound volume and tone with non-original hammers. 2) However these non-original hammers have been reinforced with the injection of collodium at the base part of the hammers. (See the brown staining at the triangular part of the hammers). It is better to use original hammers, and to use a different reinforcing solution, on the shoulders of the hammers, if the sound needs reinforcing. This piano was weak, unable to project into the hall. This was the main reason that the owners asked for an appraisal.
